Mahogany Guitar Back Braces

The mahogany back braces come as a set of three. The high quality genuine has been resawn to about 9mm in width and about 19mm high. There is one for each of the back braces for the guitar described in the book and dvd. The braces are slightly over sized and must be trimmed and shaped before gluing.

The mahogany back braces come as a set of three. The braces are the same as the ones used in the book and dvd. The high quality genuine mahogany has been re-sawn out of the same piece of wood so they all match in color perfectly. Each brace has been re-sawn to about 9mm in width and about 19mm high. There is one is 15″ in length for the lower bout.

Brace Preparation

The braces are slightly over sized and must be trimmed and shaped before gluing. First plane the braces flat and square them. Then put the radius on the bottom edge that will be glued to the back of the guitar. It is recommended that the brace then be shaped entirely leaving a flat spot in the middle at the top for clamping. This method is demonstrated in both the book and DVD.

Gluing

PVA or Titebond glue should be used to install the back braces. Clamp the braces in place with wooden cam clamps to avoid damage. Any damage to the top edge of the brace will result in a loss of height which will not coincide with the original intended height on the drawing. Once clamped wait ten minutes and clean any excess glue. Re-clamp the brace and leave clamped for at least 4 hours.

I typically start with the longest brace in the lower bout. This brace is left clamped overnight to establish the domed shape of the back.
