Plane Making Kits

J.S. Bogdanovich Guitars offers plane making kits for both the bench plane and the compass plane. We also offer a complete plane making kit which includes both plane kits and the dvd. The plane kits contain everything you need to get started following along with the DVD. Dimensions of all components in the kits are the same as that used in the DVD. The dimensions of course may be changed to suit you purpose but it is suggested that for any dimensional changes the plans be redrawn before construction to avoid errors

The Complete Plane Making Kit

The Complete Plane Making Kit includes the plane making DVD, the compass plane kit and the bench plane kit. The plane kits come complete with blades and breakers. The wood for the plane bodies is beech, the shoe is a suitable hardwood and the cross pin is hickory. The dimensions are the same as those used on the DVD.

Complete full size color drawings for both planes are include on the disc. Drawings are printable on any desktop inkjet printer that will print an 11'x17" sheet of tabloid paper.

This kit has everything you need to have you start working along with the DVD right away. Necessary equipment for plane making would include a router, band saw, table saw, and drill press. Virtually everything else can be done by hand. If constructed properly these planes can perform as well as anything you can buy. Hand Plane Making Kits

Compass Plane Kit

The compass plane kit contains everything necessary to construct the plane The kit includes a beech wood block 8-1/2" x 2-3/8"x 2-1/4" for the body, a hardwood shoe 8-3/4" x 2-5/8" x 1/8" a hickory cross pin 2-9/16" x 1/2" x 1/2", a Hock Tools 8" radius blade and breaker 1-1/2" x 3-1/2", and plans for the plane.

The body and shoe are quarter sawn for ultimate stability and the blade and breaker assembly has been custom made for our kits by Ron Hock. These blades and breakers are 3/16" thick to eliminate deflection and chatter. They are made of high quality high carbon steel and will hold an edge longer.

This is a project for all skill levels and can be completed in a weekend. Discover how rewarding it can be to work with a plane that you have created yourself. Compass planes are not readily available in the woodworking tool market place. If you need one, chances are you'll have to make it yourself. If constructed properly the plane will perform as well if not better than anything you have ever used.

The kit includes a beech wood block 11" x 2-3/8"x 2-1/4" for the body, a hardwood shoe 11-1/4" x 2-5/8" x 1/8" a hickory cross pin 2-9/16" x 1/2" x 1/2", a Hock Tools straight edge blade and breaker 1-1/2" x 3-1/2", and plans for the plane.

Blades & Breakers

The blade and breaker assembly for the compass plane are custom made for us by Ron Hock. These blades are the finest quality blades available. The curved blade has an 8" radius cutting edge. The blades are 1-1/2" wide and 3-1/2" long and are 3/16" thick to eliminate deflection and chatter

These blades are made of high quality high carbon steel to hold an edge longer, yet are not difficult to sharpen. Both the blades and breakers require some preparation before use. This preparation is explained in detail on the Plane Making DVD and on the sharpening plane blades page on this site.
