Laminating Guitar Sides Video

Guitar Making Shop

In guitar making a particular method or technique that is comfortable to do and produces repeatable high quality results is one that every guitar maker pursues. For me laminating guitar sides is it.

The video below is an excerpt from the guitar making 10-dvd box set. This video sequence demonstrates how to laminate guitar sides. The sides and laminations are roughly pre- bent to make it easier to get them in the mold.

The trick when laminating is to use thin wood of the right type, and to have a good mold. With all else being equal your results will only be as good as your mold. Complicated shapes are difficult to reproduce precisely in any material by hand, especially if these shapes must interact with other shapes. The care and time spent creating a mold is not wasted time. Once the mold is done it can be used over and over always producing the same results.

The molds seen being used in the video below are made of mdf and have been cut on a cnc machine and they adhere perfectly to the design on paper. This produces consistent results from guitar to guitar while reaping all the benefits that laminating affords. Read more about that on the side bending page. These molds are available on this site.
