The Rosette

Learn how to make a decorative rosette like the signature rosettes on a Bogdanovich guitar. The course will cover the construction of a rosette from start to finish including the ideas behind the design, wood selection, preparing the wood, creating the wheat motif, bending the pieces, routing the channels using the circle cutting router attachment, selecting and constructing the center ring, and installation. See the rosette taking shape in the top as it is installed a section at a time in the top.

Soundboard Bracing and Voicing

Without a doubt the single most important aspect of building a guitar is the construction of the soundboard. Instruction will include sleeting wood, thicknessing, selection and preparation of the bracing and patch material, laying the bracing pattern out on the surface, cutting and installing all the parts, then scalloping and tuning. Learn to work in a logical and methodical way while making steady progress.

In this course a top will be braced and voiced as it would be in the normal workflow here at the shop. The top will already have a rosette installed.

The Neck and Sides

In this class the neck and sides will be built separately and then assembled. Putting together the neck is a very crucial aspect of the building process. Creating an inferior neck from the beginning can render an otherwise great guitar useless. The entire process of building a neck is covered including wood selection, layout, cutting the scarf joint for the headpiece, the headpiece veneers, drilling the holes and routing the slots for the tuners, cutting the slots for the sides and shaping the heel. The shaping of the heel on the inside is done in its entirety. The outer portion of the heel is carved to an approximate shape for assembly. Final shaping will not be demonstrated here since it is not done until the guitar is completely assembled.

Proper technique in laminating the sides and linings is demonstrated. The wood is thicknessed and glued together on the molds. After gluing the linings and sides are assembled, the foot block is prepared and the entire neck and side assembly is ready for gluing.
